Living and leveraging company values is critical for sustained success in the modern working world.
This is predicated by a company having clear, well communicated values that are instilled by passionate leaders and lived by their teams.
I often talk about amplifying culture, where, by having clear (and well communicated) company values, you can turn up the dial and amplify performance, amplify outcomes, and deliver real long-term success.
Recently, I hosted a breakfast in Sydney for Founders and CEOs and was joined by Myles Glashier, Phocas co-CEO and co-founder. Phocas, founded in 1999, is a successful Australian head-quartered tech company who are committed to “helping people feel good about data”.
But it was through rapid growth that Phocas faced its biggest challenge and by 2015, Glashier began to focus on his leadership style, and the leadership style of his teams.
They undertook a 360-feedback process (using Leadership circle) and an Organisational Culture Index (using Human Synergistics diagnostics). This was the first pillar in a 3-year cultural transformation project, which not only saw Glashier move into a more ‘constructive style’ of leadership, but through investment in the growth of his people and the placing a higher value on teamwork and collaboration, yielded serious and measurable financial results:
Through this period, Phocas redefined how it lived values through a number of initiatives including a clear and well-articulated vision and strategy, significant investment in leadership development and professional training, a global restructure to ensure “meaty and meaningful” roles for everyone, and better recruitment practices that ensured market remuneration and cultural fit.
The values of ‘Fun, Fulfilling, Forever’ are still at the heart of the Phocas culture and continue to drive the company today.
By amplifying culture, Phocas took their business to a whole new level. And the proof, as they say….is in the data.
